Camille Saint-Saëns
Romantic
Camille Saint-Saёns and Mozart were the two composers endowed with phenomenal memory which amazed their peers and fellow musicians: Wolfgang Amadeus once unmistakably played from memory a composition containing numerous parts and whose scores were kept absolutely secret. Saint-Saёns had no record of such a feat in his biography but, as if paying homage to the great Austrian composer, he played a concerto for piano and orchestra of the latter without having the score in front of him when he was just ten. At this age he already knew more than thirty sonatas of Beethoven by heart.
As a matter of fact, Saint-Saёns didn’t often benefit from this talent of his – after working for two decades as organist he established a reputation of a brilliant improviser. He, hereby, could play not only without looking at the score but in principle without any preparation at all. A man of versatile talents he was deeply respected by his peers also for his thoughtful publications among other things. To play music of Saint-Saёns is no less pleasurable than listening to it, and on our site you’ll find a collection of nearly all important works of the composer. Here you can download the original scores and also transcriptions. Works of different level of complexity are available and some of them can be downloaded for free – in short, everyone can find something to their taste.
