The woodwind family has a special role for this large lowest-sounding member. There has always been a bunch of humorous notes about bassoons, Italians render it as “a bunch of sticks” in their language emphasizing its 7 feet of tubing, orchestra musicians lovingly call it the clown of the orchestra explaining it with the instruments ability to make funny and many-sided noises. Indeed, judging by the avalanche of roles it played in great classical works, one would not hesitate calling it an expressive instrument. Prokofiev comically named it a grandfather in his Peter and the Wolf, Ravel saw it as a lyrical part of his Bolero and Mozart assigned to the bassoon the agitated part in The Marriage of Figaro. Among other composers featuring bassoon were Grieg, Stravinsky and Weber. Unfortunately, today bassoon is rarely heard out of the classical genre and its high price makes to-be-musicians think twice before starting to learn it.
