The name of this instrument may mislead anyone little or not connected to music. Cor anglais – 'English horn' from French – has actually nothing to do either with England or with the horn. Nor was it used in France until the 19th century or in England until the mid-19th, ironic, isn't it? This double-reed instrument is actually of Polish-German-Czech origin and is an oboe da caccia's descendant, it rather looks like and sounds similar to oboe too. The first one to bring cor anglais to the orchestra was Niccolo Jommelli who wrote the cor anglais part in his version of "Ezio" opera. Haydn, Gluck followed the example and "English horn" caught on. It's been clearly most used in classical and chamber music but there are some appearances to be traced out of those genres. Cor anglais as well shows up in jazz music, a bit of pop and even some soap operas. Such prominent musicians as Paul McCandless, Sonny Simmons, Jean-Luc Fillon added to the "horn's" promotion.
