“Una Mattina” (It. ‘a morning’) is a classical instrumental composition by the popular Italian pianist & composer Ludovico Einaudi. It was released in 2004 as part of his album of the same name. The song was used in the soundtrack to the French film “The Intouchables” in 2011. “Una Mattina” (3’26) is scored for piano solo, just like most of Einaudi’s compositions. I was never sure how to classify Einaudi's music, I know it's not purely minimalist like Glass' pieces, and not quite pop either. But what I surely know is that the simplistic pattern it has, with softly changing harmonies and calm rhythm, make it both very easy to play and pleasant to listen to. I could thus settle on the adjective 'meditative' for Una Mattina. The longer you play it, the more you are getting calmed by its sound. I would definitely recommend Einaudi's music to intermediates and even beginners, for that's exactly what they would find manageable and from what they will receive authentic satisfaction as pianists. This piece would also work really well on a duo with either violin or cello, I heard such versions myself and I found them very rich in sound.
