“Ashes to Ashes” is David Bowie’s fastest-selling hit and the most iconic melancholic single of the 80ies. It was released in 1980 as part of “Scary Monsters” album and immediately became the No.1 hit in Britain. In the lyrics, one will at once recognize David’s character from the earlier “Space Oddity” hit-song – Major Tom. Bowie himself said “Ashes to Ashes” was a nursery rhyme, an ode to childhood and a reflection on the creative journey of the artist. The song has a distinctive complex vocal pattern and features Chuck Hammer’s guitar synthesizers creating a special texture. The video to the song co-directed by Bowie became the most expensive video production of the time.
