This is a string orchestra transcription of the Andante from Beethoven's Piano Sonata 15. This piece starts out modestly but then really begins to crank as it progresses. There is an optional Violin 3 part which duplicates the viola, however, due to range considerations, the few notes not covered in the Violin III part have been cued in the Cello part. This file contains the full score and a complete set of regular parts (optional violin 3 part is sold separately).

Die Pastoralsonate entstand inmitten einer tiefen Lebenskrise, in die Beethoven als Folge seiner zunehmend verminderten Hörfähigkeit geriet. Doch Beethoven sucht dem körperlichen Lei-den mit dem Willen zur Lebensbejahung zu begegnen: „ich will dem schicksaal in den rachen greifen, ganz niederbeugen soll es mich gewiß nicht.“ Daraus erklärt sich
der ausgeglichene, freundliche, idyllische Ton der Sonate. Der einleitende, über einem Sechzehntel-Staccato im Pedal sich erhebende Klagegesang im Andante wird wiederholt kontrastiert mit dem aufheiternden Dur-Motiv des Wachtelrufs. Dieser musikalische Kontrast von Leid und Lebensfreude, den Beethoven im 2. Satz seiner Pastoralsonate auskomponierte, könnte auch erklären, dass – Carl Czerny zufolge – dieses Andante „lange Zeit ein Lieblingssatz Beethovens [sc. war], und spielte es sich oft“ (vgl. San Galli, B, 1913, S. 145).
