A prelude. A small piece capable of holding a whole world of emotions and feelings. As a performer I’ve always been attracted by this genre. It has in many ways fascinated composers as well. It was proved during their time by Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and other, well-known and less known composers. Erkki Melartine is among the latter. Each of his preludes is small in size, but has a character and image of its own. There are slow ones among them, bearing features of a cantilena, and also technically demanding preludes-etudes. Each prelude is like a short musical story narrated to us by the author.
