I wrote the original song An Exmas Carol, for alto and guitar, on Christmas day 1984. It takes the melody of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" in the guitar part and the voice has its own tune lamenting the fact that we have ceased to hear or understand the message of the Christmas story. This recording is my own performance of the song.
Versions are also available for clarinet and guitar and for flute and guitar.

Oh Lonely child of Bethlehem How quiet you do lie We cannot hear above the din your message from the sky And evening stars together sing the same old Christmas piece But in our loves we're fast asleep and strife will never cease
The kingdoms of this world pass on and never shall return but man forgets it's all in vain we never seem to learn And evening stars together sing the same old Christmas piece But in our loves we stay asleep and strife will never cease
Oh lonely Child, humanity! How quiet, quiet, you do lie...
