“Ziggy Stardust” is a glam rock song by the English rock musician and one of the most influential artists of the genre – David Bowie. The song was written by Bowie in 1972 and was released as part of his concept album titled “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”. “Ziggy Stardust” is the name of the character that performs as Bowie’s alter ego in the album. Inspired by Kansai Yamamoto, the rock’n’roll star Vince Taylor and Legendary Stardust Cowboy, the character-compilation represents a human being that interacts with extraterrestrial creatures. The song was frequently used in the pop culture later (e.g. a popular song in the games Guitar Hero and Rock Band 3). The most popular covers of the song include versions by Bauhaus, Def Leppard, Seu Jorge (Portuguese), Andrew Jackson Jihad. Other songs from the album include “Starman”, “Five Years”, “Lady Stardust” and others. The sheet music to these compositions is also available at MusicaNeo.

In my opinion, it is one of the most important rock classics ever created. If you need to explain to your children what glam rock era was - just put on this tune for them and it will speak for itself. I remember being so overwhelmed with the unusual experimental and often controversial music that Bowie offered to the hungry public, it was an awe-inspiring experience back in time. Now when the time is gone, just like Bowie is, the only thing left is to reminisce the past experiences. Yet another way to recreate them would be take up the guitar and try to reproduce the favourite sounds of that era yourself. Which was exactly what I did a few days ago and which made me feel young and rebellious again. Thank you.
