“All By Myself” is a song by the American singer, guitarist and songwriter Eric Carmen. It was released in 1975 as part of Carmen’s self-titled album as well as his first and very successful single. “All by Myself” is a soft rock ballad made from a few parts. The chorus of the song is basically taken from Carmen’s 1972 song “Let’s Pretend”, while the verse is obviously based on Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Adagio Sostenuto from the Second Piano Concerto in C Minor. Reaching the second position in the famous Billboard Hot 100 chart, “All by Myself” became one of the best-selling compositions in the USA, according to RIAA. However, it turned out that unlike the US, where Rachmaninoff’s music was already in public domain, in Europe a copyright issue arose. Carmen and the rights owners then agreed for a 12% royalties deal. The most popular and successful cover of the song belongs to the Canadian singer Celine Dion. It was released in 1996 becoming Dion’s biggest hit the Unites States. The song was widely used in the popular culture, for example, in the famous pajamas scene from the 2001 film Bridget Jones’ Diary.

a perfect lyrical theme, with some of Rachmaninoff' influences to it, I believe that's one of the real songs by real musicians
