“Classical Gas” is an instrumental piece by the American classical guitarist and composer Mason Williams. He wrote it in 1968 and recorded it together with the members of the Wrecking Crew musicians collective. The song entered Williams’ most recognized music album “The Mason Williams Phonograph Record”. It was as well released as a single by Warner Bros the same year. “Classical Gas” is written in a mix of country, baroque pop, easy listening instrumental styles. The composition was supposed to act as ‘fuel music’ for classical guitar players. The piece has been awarded with the titles of Best Instrumental Composition, Best Instrumental Arrangement and Best Contemporary-Pop Performance (3 Grammies). It also earned a Special Citation of Achievement from BMI Corporation in 1998. In 1970, Mason Williams re-recorded it for his album “Handmade”. The piece is featured in the 2003 comedy film “Cheaper by the Dozen” starring Steve Martin.

What I like about the arrangements like this is that the chords, time signatures and everything else is in place and corresponds to the original. It's hard to find an appropriate score online now, out of the numerous hand-made sheets out there. The piece used to be very popular which means that with time music like that becomes sort if 'cliche'. However, with a proper transcription, it can be comprehensive and complicated enough to be sound fresh and exciting. It's not too hard to sort out the timing with this one, so you get there pretty fast.
