“Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”, also known as the “Prayer of St. Francis” or “Peace Prayer”, is a traditional prayer used by the Christians to ask God for Peace. The text of the prayer was first published in a French spiritual magazine “La Clochette” in 1912. The authorship is most often associated with the name of the Italian deacon Saint Francis of Assisi though it was never met in his writings. This prayer was widely used during both World Wars and was cited by the world’s prominent leaders in their speeches (Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, Bill Clinton). Many composers attempted to put the prayer’s words to music, but the most well-known musical setting of the hymn belongs to a songwriter from South Africa – Johann Sebastian von Tempelhoff, better known as Sebastian Temple. This version is most popular in the UK: it is the official anthem of the Royal British Legion, it was performed at the funeral of Princess Diana and at the wedding of Prince Albert II. Other prominent musicians who made their own settings of “Prayer of St. Francis” are Bing Crosby, Arthur Bliss, The Burns Sisters, John Foley, Marc Jordan, Matt Maher, Sarah McLachlan and others. Temple’s version is composed in the style of a guitar ballad and is rather intended for unison singing. It can be used in church services as well as in school, fitting a group of any size.

Glorious anthem! I can see it performed in a variety of occasions that are not limited to church services only. The text is enriched with deep and universally acknowledged truths that can reach out to every heart and soul on the planet, the power of word in all its beauty! I should praise the work of Mr. Temple too, even without the lyrics the piano melody alone sounds so inspirational. No wonder the Prayer has been performed at the state level so many times and keeps going.
