The “Cosmopolitan” Gigue (for violin, piano, and two percussion) is modern, modal take on a Baroque gigue. It is “cosmopolitan” because it draws from both the French and Italian gigue styles. Both styles share the characteristics of compound duple meter (6/8 or 12/8); binary form (with each section repeated) ; a lively tempo; and characteristic rhythms. Full score (19 pages). Approx. 9'00" duration.

Piano
Percussion I (xylophone, maracas, 2 tenor drums, slapstick)
Percussion II (vibraphone, 3 suspended cymbals, snare drum)

"The harmonies throughout the piece are modal, based on the Lydian and Mixolydian modes, and the melodies reflect their modal basis as well—primarily F Lydian in the A section, and G Mixolydian in the B section. These tonalities are freely modulated, however, and freely combined with each other. The effect is a texture in which individual elements are clearly distinguishable as to their particular modes, but their combination (often resulting in all-pitch clusters on a mode) results in a shifting, ambiguous modality."
