During Summer, 2007, Gary Powell Nash visited Ghana, West Africa for a faculty development workshop and ever since this trip, he has been inspired to compose music that incorporates his musical discoveries there. Ana’s Song and Dance is a 6 minute, single movement work for trombone choir, based on and inspired by the song Ana by Vieux Farka Touré of Mali. The original song features a melodic blues-like bass ostinato at a moderate tempo that occurs throughout much of the song and Ana’s Song and Dance uses rhythms, harmonies and melodies derived from that same motive. Ana’s Song and Dance utilizes a progressive formal structure, which begins with fanfare-like music and transitions into the music previously described, with the blues-like ostinato bass line and melodies and rhythms stemming from that same ostinato melody.
