This is mainly simple, but colorful and effective. Contrasts in texture, key, tempo and dynamics add interest. Especially beautiful is the slower version of the theme in the middle, giving the orchestra an opportunity to show its artistic sensitivity. Some high notes however are included for extra expressiveness, but overall this skillful and accessible arrangement is well suited to intermediate school or amateur orchestras.

Die 9. Sinfonie in d-Moll op. 125, uraufgeführt 1824, ist die letzte vollendete Sinfonie des Komponisten Ludwig van Beethoven. Im Finalsatz der Sinfonie werden zusätzlich zum Orchester auch Gesangssolisten und ein gemischter Chor eingesetzt. Als Text wählte Beethoven das Gedicht An die Freude von Friedrich Schiller. Als erste sogenannte Sinfoniekantate stellt das Werk eine Zäsur in der Musikgeschichte dar und beeinflusste folgende Generationen von Komponisten. Mit einer typischen Aufführungsdauer von ca. 70 Minuten sprengt die Sinfonie deutlich die damals üblichen Dimensionen und bereitete so den Boden für die zum Teil abendfüllenden Sinfonien der Romantik (Bruckner, Mahler). Heute ist „Beethovens Neunte“ weltweit eines der populärsten Werke der klassischen Musik.
1972 wurde das Hauptthema des letzten Satzes vom Europarat zu seiner Hymne erklärt und 1985 von der Europäischen Gemeinschaft als offizielle Europahymne angenommen. In der Begründung heißt es, „sie versinnbildliche die Werte, die alle teilen, sowie die Einheit in der Vielfalt“. Das in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin befindliche Autograph wurde in das Weltdokumentenerbe der UNESCO aufgenommen.
