Written in 2013, ‘Winds of the North’ is a duet for flute and clarinet and lasts just under 5 minutes.
It was written in response to a call for scores from the Boreas Ensemble. As Boreas is the legendary Greek god of north winds, the bringer of winter, I decided to name the piece accordingly.
It opens with rushing arpeggios for both instruments, perhaps suggesting the wind, after which it settles to a quick dance-like section. After another ‘rush of wind’, a slightly slower section pursues. A third rush of wind leads to a slightly extended version of the dance section and the piece ends joyfully and affirmatively.
