The first movement of this work was composed in 1983, and revised in 1984 and 1988. The remaining movements were composed between 1988 and 1994. In 2014, the piece was expanded significantly into a larger work by the same title. In 2014, the composer reduced the piece back to its original length and restored the word "Symphony" to the title. The four movements are intended to be played almost continuous.
