"A cycle of compositions for flute solo «Song and Dances of Anchuts», played by S.Kashina, closes the collection of instrumental miniatures by Ye.Shatrova. Anchuts are house spirits in the folklore of Northern Russia. The triptych has been inspired by Yu.I.Koval`s short stories. Images of shaggy fairy-tale creatures appear in the first part. They are sneaking up stealthily or dashing somewhere topsy-turvy; they are dancing, beating time with hooves, or disappearing suddenly as if dissolved in the air. The second part is a Russian turn, stylized in the old manner, which is long and plaintive as snowstorm wailing behind the snow-bound window… A small piece of coal fell out of the stove, enlivening of anchuts, and their song brightened up for a moment. But soon the twilight came again; there is only snow and wood, and wailing wind in the chimney…The third part is uproarious dancing. One can hear and see the fantastic swift round dance of little house spirits, jerking their legs up, expressed by a grotesque melody of frequently changing tonality and rhythm. The flute sounding is surprisingly different, thus, displaying a rich range of expression. The composer creates moving plastic images, which are almost visible owing to their freedom and variety of rhythm and tonal combinations".
