This is an Italian Renaissance a cappella canzonetta that is part of a collection of 21 three-part songs published in Venice in 1584. Claudio Monteverdi was still a teenager, studying with his teacher Maestro Ingegneri. Usually these canzonettes appear with only the first line of text under the notes, I have included all four verses under the notes if a group wishes to prolong the performance. The text speaks of a man in love who suffers from his pain. To keep in mind, Italian grammare and punctuation was still not totally developed in the 16th century, as we know it today. It is written in Dorian mode and does not indicate specific pitches, the piece can be performed by any three singers, transposing the written score. If you download the piece and contact me via email - joanyak@live.com - I can send you the score in Sibelius and you can print it out in a different key. The Canzonette can be performed either by three soloists or by chorus or by three instruments, or a mixture of both. The piece is written in Dorian Mode (First Mode) transposed a fourth up.
