"Christ is born today" is a short contemporary motet for choir of four mixed voices on an early Latin text often used as an Antiphon from the Magnificat sung at Vespers on Christmas Day. The motet can be sung in other contexts such as for mass or on concert programs. Instruments can be added to double the vocal parts. The harmonic style of the composition is contemporary, but at the same time it is reminiscent of Renaissance polyphony. The motet is also available for SSAA voices.

According to many sources, the lyrics come from Gregorian chant:

Hodie Christus natus est:
hodie Salvator apparuit:

hodie in terra
canunt Angeli,
laetantur Archangeli:

hodie exsultant justi,
dicentes:
Gloria in excelsis Deo,
alleluia.

Today Christ is born,
Today the Saviour appeared:

today on earth
the angels sing,
the Archangels rejoice.

today the righteous exult,
exclaiming:
Glory to God in the highest,
hallelujah.
