“Baby Crying in a Greek Village” - Program Notes
As the years are passing by, and getting older, I realize that I am increasingly attracted to my roots and whatever I consider pure and natural in any mean. Accordingly, the “plot” of this piece is placed to a Greek village, reminding me of my childhood happy summer times, spent in my village on Mountain Olympus. However, when we grow up, this life – style, free of concerns changes and dark days arrive for us to encounter. Therefore, I asked myself: “Why babies cry?” “Are not they happy?” Unfortunately, no baby can answer or, even later, we cannot answer this question because, as adults, we do not remember why we where crying. Then, I let my fantasy free to travel to find the answer to the initial question, and it returned as such: maybe that baby - crying is a result of a prophetic power that humans have which enables them to feel the real pain of life before they even experience it. The alto saxophone symbolizes the parents who lullaby the baby with folk rhythms until the baby wakes up and cries. Then, the parents keep trying to calm it down; however, their attempt which is sarcastically described in music is unsuccessful, as they are not able to persuade the baby that it will never experience the pain in its life.
