“Joy over Darkness” (2013) – Program Notes

“Joy over Darkness” was my final project in composition for my Master’s degree at Georgia State University and also my first composition I had written for wind Band. My compositional habit to alternate opposing musical characters in a single piece, and often unexpectedly, appears accordingly in this piece. It’s title reveals a battle between joy and darkness, in other words, joy and disappointment, negativity, pessimism and it expressed my emotional status during that period of my life when I was seeking reasons to encourage me to successfully complete my studies within serious financial and other problems.
