Programme note: 'Five Light Pieces' was composed in 2015 for the Duruflé Trio: Rosie Bowker - Flute, Henrietta Hill - Viola, and Clare Simmonds - Piano. The piece was revised in early 2017. The characters of each of the movements were initially contemplated by the composer as being like little machines, such as small robotic insects, but later were given more general descriptions as indicated in the movement headings: 'Petty', 'Shabby', 'Twee', 'Slight' and 'Flimsy'. The use of the word 'light' in the overall title reflects the movement headings and is also an indication of the non-serious nature of much of the music.
