Premiered in Los Angeles in 1991, Stalingrad was written as both a concert and cinematic study for full orchestra, following a series of concerts in Russia and Ukraine with the composer conducting. The mournful introduction and nightmarish march are set against a background of high-stepping military displays from the Soviet era to the modern era. The Mamayev Kurgan is an enormous burial mound dedicated to all soldiers of both sides who fought in the WWII Battle of Stalingrad. The mausoleum is guarded 24 hrs. per day, with Robert Schumann's Traumerei played nonstop. Instrumental forces require 1,2,2,2,2/4,3,3,1, Timp. Bass Dr., Ten. dr., Xyl., snare, tr., cymbals, harp/Strings. The work is approximately 10 minutes in length
