Jean-Grégoire Pénavaire (1840-1906) was born on September 15, 1840 in Lesparre, France and died in September of 1906. After studies with Sivori, Morel, Elwart, and Fetis, he was the conductor of the Théâtre Graslin de Nantes for most of his career. He wrote several operas including Chanson de mai and Ninette et Ninon (both Paris, 1873), Le Contrast (ib., 1889), and Monseigneur Scapin [Le Progrhs artistique] (Nantes, 1891) as well as the ballet La Folie espagnole (1874). He wrote several symphonic works, including the Overtures Torquato Tasso and Miguel Cervantes, a symphonic poem with chorus La Vision des croisies, works for chamber ensemble and for the piano.
