The text is based on the major theme of rejuvenation by letting go of the past and bringing in the new. The New Year must be welcomed with the acceptance of the fact that the past rests in peace. Optimism is the recurring theme in throughout the poem, and is underlined by the contrasts by ringing out and ringing in the bells.
