According to one reviewer, this is a beautiful setting of the 12th Century words - I could not possibly comment. Starting in F minor with a harmonically "open" Tenor and Bass duet, the tune is repeated, with slight timing changes, by Soprano and Alto. Moving into A-flat major, the full choir picks up the energy and the piece finishes with the triumphant "Deo Gracias". Although there is a fairly wide tessitura for the top 3 parts, this is a very approachable piece. Very effective in a darkened church at the start of a Lessons and Carols service. With thanks to the Thanet Chamber Choir for the recording of this piece.
