In the summer of 2007, Paul-André Bempéchat of The Lyrica Society for Word-Music Relations asked me to compose a song cycle in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy. I chose two poems that reflect on life, death and the notion of legacy. Both poems are unpublished, and were sent to me by the poets.
