Vedem was commissioned by Music of Remembrance and Mina Miller, Founder and Artistic Director. Mina had asked me to compose an oratorio based on the story of the boys of Terezin and their clandestine magazine Vedem (Czech for “In the Lead”). In researching the work, I was immediately captivated by the courage of these boys, as well as the depth and beauty of their art. Poet David Mason, my frequent collaborator, created a libretto entwined with six of the original Vedem poems. Two of these poems by Petr Ginz and Hanuš Hachenburg are arranged here for voice and piano.
