Flaxen Ultramarine was commissioned by University of Michigan Oboe Studio, Dr. Nancy Ambrose King, Oboe Professor. The University of Michigan school colors are maize and blue. Flaxen is another word for gold and ultramarine another word for blue. Marked Vivace’, Flaxen Ultramarine is a fast tempo, lively and dance-like single movement work in septuple meter. It’s mostly in C major mode with a ternary design. The rhythms are complex; however, they still conform to a consistent 2 + 2 + 3 eighth note pattern in 7/8 time signature.
