Between the Bliss and Me was the first of many song cycles composed for Dr. Adelaide Whitaker, who has been a major force in my development as a composer. She has continually introduced me to new wonderful poetry, especially poems by American women, and remains a tireless promoter of new vocal music. This cycle sets three poems by Emily Dickinson. I gained it so opens with a slow harmonic pace that increases as the song progresses. The piano harmonies in A Book mirror the emotional content of Dickinson's words. I took compositional liberties with the phrase "What liberty a loosened spirit brings" — not only repeating the words but setting the word "liberty" very freely to underscore its meaning. I could not prove was a birthday present for my mother's 79th birthday. The running sixteenth notes in the piano as well as the upwards harmonic progression throughout the song are meant to suggest the passage of time.
