OVERVIEW

Far From Here is an original concerto for band and ocarina. Inspired by soundtracks like Halo, The Legend of Zelda, The Hunger Games, and Rain World, it captures the emotions we experience as we endure hardship and grow as people.

Movement 1 (An Easy Life) evokes the carefree innocence of childhood through a playful waltz. The melody grows throughout the woodwind section before being interrupted by a brass fanfare. After that, the ocarina returns with the original material to finish the movement.

Movement 2 (A Long Way From Home) is a lament as life’s most formidable challenges come into view, and we long for those easier times. The ocarina and flute melody at the beginning of the movement morphs into an ethereal soundscape, slowly gaining back its structure before transforming into a chorale of sorts. Before long, all this structure fades away and we are left with the solitary ocarina and percussion to close the movement.

Finally, Movement 3 (Finale) is a triumphant fanfare that captures the feeling of conquering the obstacles that hold us back and emerging victorious. Heavily inspired by Koji Kondo’s Hyrule Field theme, this piece begins with a flowing, lyrical introduction before diving into a driving midsection that revisits previous themes as the work comes to a close.
