First symphony is one of the most large-scale symphonic works that I have ever written in my career. It consists of three movements. The format of the piece is different from most of the traditional large-scale symphonies in that the first movement is served as a sort of preparatory introduction with less dramatic materials while the climax occurs in the later movements. The piece reflects the use of concentrated post-tonal materials dominated by lyrical melodic elements. Throughout the three movements, the main thematic materials of the last two movements are introduced earlier in their previous movements while the main theme of the first movement returns in the last movement. These interconnected cycling treatments of thematic treatments solidify the structure of the whole piece.

The first movement begins with dreamlike motivic thematic materials which comprises octatonic elements. The fragments of this thematic material transform into new motivic elements in the later movements. After a section dominated by the cantabile strings and woodwinds, the music is brought to the first climax by means of powerful and forceful orchestration. After the climax, the ostinato strings enter and gradually dissolve and transform into another section which is interspersed by the colorful micropolyphonic woodwinds. In this section, the flute displays the main theme of the second movement by transforming and expanding its rhythmic pattern. After the second sparkling climax, the melodious violin solo enters and the music fades away quietly. The second movement begins with disjunct introductory materials which are made up of important intervallic motivic fragments and those are important for further development throughout the rest of the piece. The following energetic section is full of glowing and scherzo-like materials. After reaching the fanfare-like and ablaze climax, another contrasting section enters in which the music becomes stillness and placid. After that the first ablaze section returns with some modifications. The last movement begins with an intense theme announced by the strings. This theme is made up of octatonic pitch materials and several motivic cells become prominent throughout the movement. In the last section, the music becomes rather mysterious and the strings display ostinatic pitch materials while they are continually juxtaposed and interposed by various other instruments while approaching the end. A dramatic coda with the recurrent theme of the first movement brings the symphony to an end.
