Program notes:
Salamis, now an archeological site on the east coast of Cyprus, was an important city in ancient times. In my first visit there, the picturesque ruins of the ancient buildings seemed to suggest the gestures of dance. In the abstracted dance music of Salamis Dances the sounds of current Cypriot folk music intertwine with a foreign interlude, evoking echoes of the long history of changes that is the island's heritage.
