The piece is inspired by the poem, On Hearing a Monk from Shu Playing His Lute, written by Li Bai during the Tang Dynasty. The poem depicts a monk playing his green lute by sweeping his fingers over the strings as if the poet hears the sough generated by wind through pine-trees. The poet also feels that a running stream washes his heart and does not feel the sun departs from autumn loud.
The music begins with soft and subtle tones. Soon the zheng blends with the other instrumental sounds by presenting repeated figures which fade out until reaching the climax. This section symbolizes “wind through pine-trees” as well as “running streams.” Nevertheless, the piece ends in a contrasting manner which fades out mysteriously.
