“Mu isamaa, mu õnn ja rõõm” is the national anthem of Estonia since 1920, the melody of which was written by the Finnish composer of German origin Fredrik Pacius (1809-1891), which is also the melody of the Finnish anthem. The text of the song in Estonian was written by Johan Voldemar Jansen. In Estonia it was first sung at a singing festival, which took place on July 18-20, 1869 in Tartu. In Soviet times, singing the anthem was banned. With the restoration of Estonian statehood in 1991, the song became the official anthem again. The Estonian national anthem has a long and very interesting history, full of drama. The peculiarity is that this national symbol of the country is the same as in Finland. Musical works differ only in the rhythms of performance - faster in Estonia and slower in Finland. The Estonian anthem was born in the middle of the 19-th century. First, a melody was written in 1848, and then poems appeared that touched Estonians to the core. The song gained popularity in both Estonia and neighboring Finland, for the following reasons: The composer who created the melody was a Finn of German descent, Frederik Pacius; The author of the verses, the poet was the Estonian Johan Voldemar Jansen. In Finland, the tune of "Maamme" was sung by cheerful and hardworking students, for whom the composer created a piece of music. The spread of the song in both countries was facilitated by the holding of 1869 the first singing festival in the city of Tartu, which was attended by over 800 participants. The national movement in Finland and Estonia caused the song to spread not only among students. Therefore, the population of countries became increasingly concerned with the ideas and feelings of the song, which contributed to the development of national identity, culture and mentality. The First World War opened up enormous opportunities for Estonians. After creating its own independent state, the government thought about which song should become the main, national anthem. The choice fell on "Maamme", which was loved by every inhabitant of the country. Her words reflected the desire for freedom and the great love of Estonians to their country.
