“How Great Thou Art” is a popular hymn whose story began with a nine-verse poem “O Great God” by the Swedish pastor Carl Boberg. He wrote it in 1885 after witnessing a near-perfect moment of beautiful calmness: right after a big thunderstorm suddenly ceased, the church bells rang amid the crystal clear skies. Originally in Swedish, the poem was later translated and published in German and in Russian. It was in 1949 when an English missionary Stuart K. Hine translated the poem into English. His version currently remains the most popular one, though there have been other translations too, including in numerous other languages. The list of artists who performed the famous hymn is impressively long. A few names include George Shea, Dixie Carter, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Carrie Underwood, Daniel O’Donnell, Pentatonix and many others, for who the song brought various awards and nominations. Today, “How Great Thou Art” remains one of the most widely-performed Christian hymnals.
