This is a variant of the folksong "Maremma" found in the archives of the city of Grosseto's cultural collection of traditional melodies from the region. The famous but sad text refers to the deaths that occurred in great numbers due to Malaria. This is a setting for three upper voices. This is a translation of the original Italian text of the score:
Everyone calls it Maremma but it seems to me a bitter Maremma. The bird that flies there loses its feather, and I lost a person that was dear to me.
My heart cries when you go there, because I am afraid that you won't return. Maremma, Maremma I curse you, may Maremma be cursed for those who love.
