This 6 page, three movement piece contrasts the Classical Period (represented by Movement II) with the Romantic and later periods (represented by Movements I & III). The 1st and 3rd movements start in E minor but make frequent momentary forays into other keys, so much so that these sections have a “mixed modal” sound…even a sense of “modal ambiguity.” The devices used are: borrowed chords, secondary dominants, the Neapolitan sixth chord, augmented sixth chords, occasional direct modulation, and “chromatic mediants,” where the mediant is chromatically altered from its usual diatonic state. A complete harmonic analysis is available upon request for anyone who purchases the sheet music.
