PREMISE

SIGNS AND SOUNDS is a series of coloring books created by Joan Yakkey for children to learn musical notation and its execution by singing or by using instruments, designing and improvising lessons.

This recent volume “SIGNS AND SOUNDS for young musicians” is a beginner’s METHOD for PIANO that utilizes the same philosophy as the coloring books for studying the rudiments of solfeggio. The children learn to understand musical notation and interpretation by improvising melodic and chordal structures on the piano that refer to life relationships with which they are already familiar. In this new volume, they can transfer the relationships to the keyboard, following the general story line and suggestions that the written score offers.

It is not necessary at first to understand the exact keyboard notes to interpret the music provided. The children should acquire a wider view and interpretation of a musical idea, and gradually narrow down their studies to specific notes, keys and rhythm. Different tonalities and modal scales are imbedded in the musical examples. White and Black keys are used equally.

In this volume, rhythm is interpreted relatively: white notes are longer than black notes, quarter notes are longer than eighth and sixteenth notes etc. The children will learn to be mobile on the keyboard and will think of playing musical motifs in a spatial sense, moving hands along the keyboard, repeating melodies or chords, without thinking about the specific notes one at a time. The “design” of the music is what we are asking a young student to notice and interpret.

For the most part, the rests are missing, the sequence of notes from one hand to the other are obvious by their position on the staff. Key Signatures and bar lines are also missing. Children are encouraged to develop their own ideas, drawings, graphic images and corresponding musical notes on the great staff; they should develop personal titles that reflect their own musical ideas.

This is one of the colouring books developed by Joan Yakkey for introducing children to musical notation at a young age (3 - 8 yrs old) through colouring and drawing designs. This volume leaves children full freedom in writing their own music which they can then interpret on any instrument or by singing. Effectively, the child "navigates" through the musical staff discovering note values and placement. The book can be downloaded here and photocopied more than once for the child to repeat his drawings. We include a guide for the Teacher and we suggest that a teacher or parent follow the child's progress as they colour the book. In total, there are 5 levels of colouring books in the SIGNS AND SOUNDS Solfeggio series: Orange, Red, Green, Blue, Brown. The books contain instructions on each page in both English and Italian language. The ORANGE book is also available in Spanish.

This workbook is designed for children from age 9 approximately and beginning adults. This is the Fourth volume of a series of 5 workbooks that gradually teach musical notation and solfeggio singing for children or beginning adults, either in a class situation or for single lessons. The music teacher or a parent should be a guide for the children and follow their development as they procede through the book. The music they write can be performed by improvising on any instrument or vocally or as a class chorus. The preview provided contains Teacher Guidance information and a more specific explanation of the Yakkey solfeggio method.

The exercises are often based on folk and classical musical excerpts, and may be performed either by a single student, vocally or instrumentally, or they may be interpreted collectively in choral or instrumental groups. This Workbook presents numerous exercises that need to be completed, corrected or invented, this assures an active student participation that promotes interest in reading musical notation as well as learning the basic notions of musical theory, harmony and counterpoint.
The solfeggio system used in the Yakkey method is based on the relative interpretation of notes and intervals through the means of moving the “C” clef. This is movable reading, an ability which will later serve the musician in transposing music and in reading a full score written in various clefs. It is essentially the FIXED DO system that can be transformed into the MOVABLE DO system when the melodies to be sung are out of range or printed on ledger lines that are difficult to read. For example: singing a song in G major may result out of range for many singers, therefore substituting the “G” clef with a “C” clef on the second line is actually using a Movable Do, it’s a question of semantics really, but one substitutes the G as the tonal note for a C (reading and singing a C) without changing the printed music. A “c” then is sung as a “c”. In this way both European and North American or Oriental students may take advantage of the exercises included in the method. The use of the MOVABLE DO system (where a note is read and sung on the pitch as written but sung on different syllables) however, still remains an option if it is preferred by the teacher.
The purpose of this publication is to prepare the student of the 21st century to read atonal, modal, dodecaphonic and chromatic music with the same spontaneity as tonal music. Gradually the student memorizes the simple intervals found in the C major and A minor scales. The notes are numbered progressively according to the steps in these scales and presented in various positions on the staff (as if transported). The accidentals (sharps and flats) are interpreted orally and written with a plus (+) or minus (-) sign next to the note. Following this study, intervals are then treated independently and extracted from the context of scales so that the student remembers them separately and learns to easily sight-read and remember contemporary melodies.

This workbook is designed to teach more advanced notions about solfeggio to older children, adolescents and beginning adults. This is the Fifth volume of a series of 5 workbooks that gradually teach musical notation and solfeggio singing for children or beginning adults, either in a classroom situation or for single lessons. The workbook includes many written and performing exercizes using any alto or soprano instrument or performed vocally. The preview provided contains examples of the procedure on single, double and triple-lined musical staves.

The exercises are often based on folk and classical musical excerpts. This Workbook, like the precedent ones, presents numerous exercises that need to be completed or invented, this assures an active student participation that promotes interest in reading musical notation as well as learning the basic notions of musical theory, harmony and counterpoint.
The major topics discussed are:
The G CLEF
The C CLEF and TRANSCRIPTION from one Clef to the other.
Accidentals (Sharps, Flats and Naturals)
Substitution of Clefs in complicated Key Signatures (similar to Movable Do "Kodaly" system)
RHYTHMS and Subdivision of the Quarter Note with exercizes / TRIPLETS
DOTTED NOTES
DIATONIC, MAJOR & MINOR SCALES
WHOLE-STEPS AND HALF-STEPS
Perfect and Imperfect INTERVALS
UNISON AND 2/3 PART SONGS WITH LYRICS AND SOLFEGGIO SYLLABLES, NUMBERS
