Battre en retraite is a repeating 8-bar phrase, shifting between 3/4 and 4/4 time. With its slow tempo and relatively easy rhythmic figures, it can provide a good show-piece for a beginning ensemble, or a closing “cool down” number after a more complicated work (the composer’s own Batterie comes to mind…)

In this score, High Drums refers to snare drums of all types and any other high-tuned drums played with sticks. Tenor Drums refers to mid-range tenor and concert tom drums and the like, while Bass Drums refer to those specific drums as well as the lowest-pitched drums in the ensemble. Accents refers to any non-drum percussive device, including by not limited to cymbals, gongs, triangles, other idiophones and/or any other similar thing at hand.

Any number of players performing on the instruments of each type may be employed.

The High Drums play through the phrase first, and are then joined by the Tenor Drums on the first repeat. The Bass Drums enter on the third repeat, and the Accents enter on the fourth repeat. Once all parts are in, repeat many times in a long, dramatic decrescendo into silence.
