The text for The Kings They Came is from the poem “Christmas Carol” by Sara Teasdale. Teasdale (1884–1933) published this poem in 1911 and won the Columbia Poetry Prize (which was later known as the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry) in 1918. A 1926 New York Times Book Review described her poetry as musical and lyric, stating “MissTeasdale is first, last, and always a singer.” It is in this spirit of “joyous and unstudied song” (as a New York Times Book Review described Teasdale’s poetry in 1915) that The Kings They Came is presented: the music is unpretentious, tuneful, and—even in the sections that are minor or modal—unabashedly joyous.
