“Say It in Jazz And Distort It!” - Program Notes
According to my opinion, jazz music is a music idiom which is the appropriate to fuse with Greek traditional music. A pair of themes that I had composed a few years ago was the material that this piece for xylophone, vibraphone and marimba was based on. It was fun to write it and I thought that this piece would be the right one to end my composition recital with! In this piece I incorporated developmental sections and sections where instruments improvise on given chord progressions which are customary in jazz music. The title is a “playing with words”. “Legetos” is a form of one of the eight modes of the Byzantine music and it derives from the verb “Lego”, (Gr. “Λἐγω”) which means “I say”. The verb “distort” also refers playfully to the chromatic Byzantine Scale, which is a “distortion” of the natural diatonic scale, as the two median notes of each of the two tetrachords are distorted, changing the intervallic relationship and, of course, the scale itself.
