“Eight Little Sketches for Piano”
As in other compositions I have composed in the past, in this piece too, I manipulated polyphony (multiple independent melodies unfolded simultaneously) differently from the European tradition idiom, adjusting it to the Eastern tradition philosophy. It contains elements of the form of Fugue (Greek, Φυγή=chase), where the initial theme receives its response in another voice and the form of Passacaglia, where the initial theme is always present, while the musical environment constantly changes, however, the form of this piece is not strictly the one or the other. Additionally, the initial theme itself is varied every time it appears, revealing a “Theme and Variations” traditional form used extensively in Europe. Finally, this piece is the newest composition of a series of compositions I composed for several solo instruments based on the same concept: presenting one by one the eight modes of Byzantine Sacred Music.
