Prayer of St. Ambrose (2003) for alto saxophone and organ is based on an earlier work written and dedicated to trumpeter Colby Cooman.

The work is a subdued and lyrical work, suitable for either concert or church uses. An opening section of unfolding/introduction leads to a gentle aria over a pulsing accompaniment which builds to a climax. A warm coda closes the work.

The title of the piece is taken from the famous prayer attributed to St. Ambrose of Milan (c. 340 - 397) quoted at the top of the score. The title also pays homage to the famous work for trumpet and organ, Prayer of St. Gregory, by American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000).

"Lord, teach me to seek Thee,
and reveal Thyself to me when I seek Thee.
For I cannot seek Thee unless Thou teach me,
nor find Thee except Thou reveal Thyself.
Let me seek Thee in longing,
let me long for Thee in seeking.
Let me find Thee in love,
and love Thee in finding. Amen."
