"Maydens Song" & "Queenes Alman" by BYRD, from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (1612), arranged for String Quartet. Kept in the original range, that of the human voice, so the violins do not soar into the stratosphere, as usual for them. The effect is that of a viol consort. An gratifying and interesting addition to a concert programme, especially one focusing on English music, or the present Queen of the United Kingdom, both of the pieces referencing her namesake, Queen Elizabeth the First.
