“Piano Trio in C Major” is the first of the three famous “Bartolozzi Trios” (Hob. XV:27-29) by Joseph Haydn. It was composed in 1797, during one of composer’s visits to London, and published right after he got back to Vienna. It was in London where he met a very talented young musician and teacher Theresa Jansen Bartolozzi who inspired many composers for writing music. This piano trio is also a dedication to this outstanding woman and pianist, just like two more Haydn’s sonatas. Judging by the challenging character of the composition, it can be concluded that Theresa was a virtuoso performer. The trio consists of a rapid dynamic Allegro, highlighting the piano’s rich bass register, a slow yet colorful Andante where piano and violin unite beautifully and a contrasting Finale, delightful, striking and unexpected. The overall combination of instruments – piano, cello and violin – makes the work rumble and spin in a close dance at the same time. I love these three famed trios by Haydn as they feel a lot ahead of their time in technique, refined score-writing and elegance of instrumental combination. It is sheer pleasure to listen to and play the piece from the very first loud notes of Allegro all the way to the bright Finale. My favourite part, though, is the varicolorous Andante, for it is truly an embodiment of fabulous style Haydn introduced. A difficult score, advanced players only.
