If you've always wanted to perform something by Hildegard von Bingen, but the standard transcriptions leave you just as bemused as the original neumatic notation, rejoice! for behold, I give you a different kind of transcription! Instead of a series of stemless blobs which tell you nothing at all about rhythms, my transcription of "O quam preciosa" lays out, in precise and detailed notation, one possible interpretation of the rhythmic nuances of the chant. Of course it is just that: one possible interpretation. But whether as a guide for a soloist who may have little or no prior experience with this particular, highly decorated, style of chant, or as a way of giving a group of singers some unity of purpose as they navigate Hildegard's long and winding melismas, I think there is value in having that one possible interpretation spelled out as I have done here.
