In Dana Gioia’s Being Happy, the narrator looks back, reflecting on an early love affair that lasted only two weeks. The repetitive rhythmic accompaniment suggests the frantic pace of the affair. This rhythm relaxes when necessary to emphasize certain phrases (“just those two breathless weeks,” “maybe it wasn’t really love”). The second half of the poem becomes more serious and the final harmony is purposely left unresolved.
