The Pastoral & Musette is a two movement work for octavin (in Bb) and piano with a duration of about 5 minutes. The solo part is thoroughly idiomatic to the peculiarities of the octavin. But because octavins are quite rare (with even fewer performers) the part may be substituted for cornet or trumpet. The audio features the Musette movement played on clarinet. The piece attempts to exploit the octavins' plaintive character in the Pastoral, while the Musette explores a more jocular side with reference to J.S. Bach's Musette in D, BWV 126. The piece is dedicated to Julius Jehring (1828-1905), inventor of the octavin, and Franz Oscar Adler (1862-1922), instrument manufacturer.
